Middle Level Teacher Education
Overview
The Middle Level Teacher Education program at Illinois State will prepare you for a professional educator’s license for teaching young adolescents in grades 5-8. As part of the requirements for this program, you will choose two subject areas in which to focus your studies. Throughout the coursework, teacher candidates will gain the professional knowledge and skills needed to become a highly effective educator, as well as approximately 350 hours of hands-on classroom experience prior to student teaching.

Middle school teachers facilitate the transition from childhood to young adulthood by helping their students delve more deeply into subject matter, as well as learn more about themselves and the world around them. By understanding adolescents and how they learn, middle level teachers can create exciting educational experiences that will foster a love for learning and opportunities for growth during a pivotal time in their students’ lives.
